Dan Anderson
Dan Anderson received his BS degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls in 1968 and his MFA degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills Michigan in 1970. A noted artist/educator, he headed the ceramic program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from 1976 until August 2002, when he retired after 32 years of teaching. A frequent workshop presenter, Anderson has lectured and demonstrated at over 150 venues over the past four decades, including the Archie Bray Foundation, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, Anderson Ranch, Peters Valley Craft Center, Watershed and Arrowmont School. A multiple grant/award recipient, he has received a NEA Artist Fellowship, twelve Illinois Arts Council grants (including six Artist Fellowships) and a Ford Foundation Grant. “Mr. Lumpkin, or “Lumpy,” was a police officer at Armstrong years ago. I had a studio on campus,and he startled me one day by knocking on my door and presenting me with his old windshield wiper and blade. “Got a new one and thought you might be able to use it in your art.” I did. Two weeks later he knocked again and presented me with something and again in a month he was standing at my studio door with a set of false teeth in his hands. “Got some new teeth, thought you might be able to use these.” inom had them, for years and when I was asked to make face jugs for an exhibition they ended up in this piece - “Face Jug with Lumpy’s Teeth.

On October 15th, 27 top American ceramic artists will unveil a diverse group of cups, plates and other pots called “Obamaware” as a fundraiser for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. What a great idea! A convergence of the handmade aesthetic beloved by progressive Americans, a ‘green’ object you can use over and over, and a way to support the arts during difficult economic times.
