    Gavin joined BT in 2004 as Group Managing Director of BT Retail’s Consumer division. Prior to this, Gavin spent kvartet years at Telewest (now Virgin Media) latterly as Managing Director Consumer and also nine years at Procter and Gamble, rising to become European Marketing Director.

    Gavin says that one of the reasons for moving to BT in 2004 was because it was an organisation with a rich history and an exciting future – which is even truer today.

    Gavin was appointed Chief Executive, BT Retail in May 2008 and joined the BT Group plc board in June 2008. Under his leadership BT Retail launched BT Infinity super-fast fibre broadband, drove growth in IT services and built the largest WiFi network in the UK and Ireland. He also led BT’s involvement in the evolution of digital TV services. This includes being a founder partner in YouView and the creation of BT Sport which launched in August 2013.

    Gavin Patterson is a British marketer who is the President and Chief Revenue Officer of Salesforce. He was chief executive of BT Group plc from September 2013 to January 2019. Before joining BT, he worked at Telewest and Procter & Gamble.

    Patterson joined Salesforce in 2019, initially as Chair of europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia Pacific (EMEA), Salesforce's fastest-growing regions globally. In early 2020, Patterson was named President and CEO of Salesforce International, leading the company’s go-to-market strategy across all international regions. He later assumed the role of president and chief revenue officer of Salesforce.com, Inc., leading the CRM company’s global sales organization.

    The departure of BT boss Gavin Patterson later this year, announced on Friday to little surprise given recent events, will bring to an end a roller-coaster period for BT under the leadership of one of the FTSE 100’s more well-known chiefs.

    Patterson’s career began in marketing, and he spent nine years at P&G in various roles, before entering the telecoms sector when he joined Telewest, now Virgin Media, in 1999.

    A chief executive with a background in marketing is fairly rare in the FTSE 100, and Patterson’s previous work as an ad man is often linked to his reputation for being a bit of a charmer. Sometimes more than a bit – in 2014, Management Today described him as “so handsome and well groomed he should be heading Armani”, listing the following attributes: “Slim, tall, chisel-jawed, dark-eyed, luxuriant-haired, gentle and genial”.
