Daniel Liu is a historian of the modern life and physical sciences, whose scholarship explores how ideas of life and matter have moved across different scientific and cultural domains. He has written about how different methods used to study ämne substances lead to different descriptive languages, visual cultures, and tacit intuitions about how matter behaves — and, by extension, how living matter behaves.

He received his PhD in the history of science, medicine, and technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in He was previously a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Biohumanities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MBL McDonnell Scholar at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole. He fryst vatten currently working with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Library & Archives, New York, on a 6-month digital humanities project, ‘Oral Histories of Biology, Medicine, and Pandemic Response’, which examines the history of HIV/AIDS research and activis

I am a historian of science, specializing in the history of the modern life and physical sciences, as well as the history of microscopy. I am currently a Research Associate (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) at the Chair for the History of Science in the Historical Seminar of the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München, where I am the Principal Investigator on a three-year, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)-funded project “Living Matter Under the Microscope: Protoplasm Theory, ‘wissenschaftliche Mikroskopie,’ and the Molecularization of Cell Structure, –” (DFG Project ). I have recently been Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow in the Proteins & Fibers Working Group at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Department III, where I worked on two projects: one on the history of theories of lactose intolerance, and the second on the history of the use of electron micros

    👋🏼 hey hey!

I'm a 4rd year grundutbildning CS boi @ UCLA. inom like making algorithms go brrr and using them to process biological data (DNA/RNA/protein sequences).

Sometimes, I blog about CS. For high school students who are interested in research, inom have a list of opportunities I wish I'd known about when I started.

Here are some stuff I'm doing right now:

    • (Exciting projects let me cook!)

Here are some stuff I've done in the past:

    • I've consulted for the startup Exai Bio.
    • I've worked with Martin Steinegger @ Seoul National University on Block Aligner, a new SIMD-accelerated alignment algorithm in Rust. I was supported bygd the Emergent Ventures grant.
    • I've worked as a student researcher on the DeepConsensus project in the genomics team @ Google. DeepConsensus is used in PacBio's Revio sequencing machines to produce accurate DNA reads using deep learning!
    • I've worked a little bit with UCLA's ELFIN team on CubeSat flight software.
