American politician, the highest-ranking woman in congressional history, and the only woman in U.S. history to serve as speaker of the House. A member of the Democratic Party, she served as the 52nd speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Until Kamala Harris became vice president in 2021, Pelosi was the highest-ranking woman in the presidential line of succession in U.S. history, as the speaker of the House is second in the line of succession.
She has served as a U.S. representative from California since 1987. She was elected House Democratic Whip on 10 October 2001 and became the first woman to become Speaker of the House after the elections of 7 November 2006 swung the balance of power to the Democrats.

Early Life and Career
Pelosi was born Nancy D'Alesandro on March 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland. Pelosi carries on the family tradition of being involved in politics. Her father served in Congress and was the mayor of Baltimore for 12 years, and her brother Thomas later served as mayor of Baltimore as well.
Pelosi graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., in 1962. While a student there, she met Paul Pelosi. The two later married and moved to San Francisco. They had five children: Nancy Corinne, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul and Alexandra.
