Lorne Leibel, born in Toronto in , was fascinated with boats from an early age. In , he represented Canada in the Olympics, sailing in the Tempest class with his cousin. After the Games, Lorne focused his attention on developing his career as a homebuilder. Six years later, during a visit to a friend’s cottage, he was offered a ride in a high speed offshore powerboat. In Lorne’s words, “To säga I was hooked would be an understatement!” He first purchased a foot performance boat, then a faster foot “Cigarette.” After that, it was off to Miami, the hotbed of performance boating and offshore racing. He eventually purchased a foot, three-man, offshore racing machine from Japan and set about building a team. In , he won the American Power Boat Association’s rookie-of-the-year award and was named Canadian Yachtsman of the Year (Powerboat) that same year. Stan Leibel was very active in yacht racing during the s and s and represented Canada in numerous international tournaments, including the Metre World Championships and the Mexico City Olympics. In the latter, he placed sixth in the metres class alongside Ernest Weiss and Jack Hasen. He had also been in the running to represent Canada in this class at the Tokyo Games, but ultimately lost the trials to Sandy MacDonald. He later competed in the Star class World Championships in , where he was 42nd out of 49 entrants, with the non-Olympian Tony Lorch.
By career, Leibel was a real estate developer in Toronto and served as president of his own firm. The business eventually passed to his son, Lorne, who represented Canada in the Tempest Class at the Montreal Games alongside Stan’s nephew Allan.
