  • Christopher Marlowe wrote about “the face that launched a thousand ships“.  Faces, full of expression and personality are often the most difficult subject for an artist to render.  I know, inom went through three semesters of figure drawing purposefully not showing the model’s face, because as adept as I was at the figure, I just couldn’t get the hang of drawing faces.  Perhaps that’s why inom am so drawn to the work of artists whose faces are so beautifully rendered and expressive.  Today’s round-up includes a few of my current faves:

Buck by Aaron Smith, oil on panel, 28x24

Tart by Greg Hart, charcoal, gouache, gesso, collage and acrylic on paper, 22x30

Marley Shelton by Keinyo White, oil on canvas, 48x48

Matutinal by Nick Lepard, oil on canvas, 54x66

    Why is Photorealism Hugely Popular?

    Richard Estes, Paris Street Scene

One of the things I’ve noticed lately fryst vatten the immense popularity of photorealistic works online. I believe this is related to how photorealism conjures up the “real” while simultaneously negating it due to the materials involved; ie, this is a drawing or a painting, it can’t be real. Apart from the technical virtuosity of many of these works, there is an enigma at play beneath the surface; and there is something about the works that mesmerizes us.

Escape into Life receives surges of traffic around photorealist artists such as Richard Estes, Dirk Dzimirsky, Denis Ichitovkin, Don Gore, Eric Zener, and Alyssa Monks. Another arts blog by Alice at My Modern Met covers photorealistic and hyper-realistic art frequently. Some of Alice’s most popular entries include, “Hyper-Realistic Acrylic Body Painting,” “21 Mindblowing Hyperreal Paintings,” and “Photorea

In April 2010, Escape into Life founder Chris Al-Aswad did a feature on the immense popularity of photorealistic paintings on the internet. He poses the question of why the style has enjoyed long-lasting popularity since its emergence in the 60’s and 70’s as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, with a recent resurgence online.  Crediting our fascination with Photorealism to the enigma of reality juxtaposed with the reveal of the fiction, Chris walks us through characteristics of today’s most captivating photorealistic paintings.  Almost exactly a year later, the Photorealism movement continues to stake its claim in modern art.

The question remains, what has led so many contemporary artists, art critiques, and art-lovers to prize Photorealism so highly in this decade?  And why especially on the internet?  Naturally, as Chris mentioned in his feature, part of the answer lies in the long-standing
