Prunella Ransome was a fey and hauntingly vulnerable redheaded beauty who only made a handful of major films, and never achieved the major stardom she so richly deserved. However, she was absolutely unforgettable as the pathetic Fanny Robin, abandoned by her lover Sergeant Troy - played by '60s icon Terence Stamp - for having mistakenly jilted him on their wedding day in John Schlesinger's masterful 1967 adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd".

Prunella Jane Ransome (18 January 1943 – 4 March 2002) was an English actress, primarily active on television and films.
Early life
[edit]Ransome was born in Croydon, Surrey. She later lived in Fareham, England where her father, Jimmy Ransome, was headmaster of West Hill Park School from 1952 to 1958.[1] Ransome studied at Elmhurst School for Dance and began her performing career as a teenager.

Biography[]
Born in Croydon, Surrey, she studied at Elmhurst School for Dance and appeared in a number of stage musicals before her appearance in The Matchgirls led to a major role in Far From the Madding Crowd, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. She also appeared in the 1969 bio Alfred the Great.
The majority of Ransome's subsequent screen appearances were on television, including on Warship, A Horseman Riding By and Dangerous Knowledge, before she went into semi-retirement following her role as Fanny Garland in Sorrell and Son.
Ransome passed away in 2002.
