Wayne Morrell: The Inspiration of Nature
Guest blog post by Judith A. Curtis, Rockport Art Association, Massachusetts. Wayne Morrell: The Inspiration of Nature will be on view at Rockport Art Association July 18 through August 19,
A trained draftsman, Wayne Morrell approved the creed of American Impressionism that a painting should be filled with light emphasizing ‘solidity of objects and transparency of shadow,’ without losing form. “A work of art,” said Morrell, “should appeal to both the intellect and the heart and soul of the artist.”

Despite having no formal fine arts education, Morrell was undaunted by the ambiance he found on moving to Rockport, MA. He lightened his earth toned palette and, inspired by the light and subject matter of Cape Ann, began painting lily ponds, flower gardens and the ubiquitous bright beach umbrellas of summer. Wayne Beam Morrell (American, ) artist, illustrator and impressionist painter primarily known for his American Impressionist marine paintings, landscapes, cityscapes & townscapes, coastal scenes, snowscapes, figurative and genre paintings. Mediums worked in include; oil, pastels and watercolor. Morrell was born in Clementon, New Jersey in and as a young child took an immediate interest in drawing. As a result, he attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art studying draftsmanship and commercial art. At the suggestion of his grandfather, he also took a fourteen week course of a government sponsored evening course on aeronautics and drafting at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. In addition, he attended a program at the Famous Artists School, which was an instructional correspondence course of two dozen lessons.
