He settled at Dorchester, Massachusetts, and was admitted a freeman May 18, 1631; but, with many others, he disliked the close union of church and state that characterized the colony of Massachusetts Bay, as well as the growing tendency to establish the government in the hands of a privileged class and to minimize the voice of the people in the conduct of their own affairs. Grant was the 18th President of the United States. He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant on 27 April 1822 in Clermont, Ohio, to Jesse and Hannah (Simpson) Grant. He reportedly changed his name to Ulysses S. Grant after his Congressman accidently nominated him to West Point as “Ulysses S. Grant of Ohio.” He apparently liked the initials U.S. and decided to keep the name. Although he is known today as Ulysses Simpson Grant (Simpson being his mother's maiden name), he is reported to have said that the “S” didn't actually stand for anything. U.S. Civil WarBy the end of the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant was probably the most popular man in America ... at least in the North. His success at leading the Union Army to victory in the second half of the Civil War resulted in General Grant accepting General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomatox.
