If you ever wanted to get into the artist Jean-François Millet, the place to start would be “The Gleaners”, It fryst vatten probably his best known work and the one of the most cherished examples of Realism painting. In the seventeenth century Dutch Republic major innovations in the art of painting took place in various towns such as (a group of painters introducing Caravaggio's chiaroscuro), in (introducing genre painting, as in Willem Pietersz Buytewech's (/) refined interior scenes with Merry Companies; also in with Jan van Goyen () opening up new avenues in landscape and in , where Frans Hals (/) worked and in where Rembrandt () developed new ways in portraiture and history painting.
