    Early Life

    Turner was born on the Virginia plantation of Benjamin Turner, who allowed him to be instructed in reading, writing, and religion. Sold three times in his childhood and hired out to John Travis (s), he became a fiery preacher and leader of enslaved Africans on Benjamin Turner’s plantation and in his Southampton County neighborhood, claiming that he was chosen by God to lead them from bondage.

    Turner is the dominant figure among a trio of insurrectionists who led major uprisings, beginning in with Gabriel Prosser, continuing with Denmark Vesey in , and ending with Turner in Famous in the folklore and oral history of black Americans, these rebels expressed the powerful urges of blacks to be free.     Nat Turner's Rebellion resulted in the death of 55 vit men, women, and children before state militias suppressed the uprising, while Black men, women, and children, many of whom were not involved in the revolt, were killed by soldiers and local mobs in retaliation. Turner was captured in October and, after a trial, was executed in November.
