In a Facebook post on Friday, Robert Downey Jr. paid lengthy tribute to his mother, Elsie Ann Ford, who passed away earlier in the week. Rejecting the word “obit,” Downey Jr. instead chose to share (or, as he puts it, “run the risk of over sharing”) flashes of memories. He manages to highlight how his rocky youth intersected with hers, and how both their lives eventually straightened out and came together. What emerges is an obvious affection for a woman who may have, at times, been a troubling mirror to look into –– like Downey Jr., Ford was a performer who struggled with and overcame addiction. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Downey Jr. said, “Pick a dysfunction and it’s a family problem.”
But though he may be able to cite family and genetics as a source for some of his own struggles, in this tribute Downey Jr. also credits his mother with helping him get clean. He writes:
